Subject: Urgent Update from Concerned Hatzalah Members
Dear Community Members,
It is with heavy hearts that we, concerned volunteer members of Hatzalah, reach out to you today. Over recent months, we have observed concerning developments within Hatzalah South Florida, which compel us to share this urgent update with our community.
Regrettably, Hatzalah South Florida has transitioned from a community-driven, faith-based organization to a private company, governed by self-appointed board members. This departure from our founding principles, which emphasized community accountability and democratic governance, is deeply troubling.
We must bring to your attention the alarming consequences of these changes. HSF's response times have significantly lengthened, surpassing acceptable norms, and there is an acute shortage of paramedic coverage for critical emergencies. This shortfall in essential services poses a grave risk to the lives of individuals in need. We implore you, in critical situations, to contact Hatzalah first and then immediately call 911. It is disconcerting to note that HSF dispatchers have increasingly relied on 911 due to the lack of available medics or EMT responders and motivated volunteers.
Furthermore, the morale among HSF members has reached an all-time low, primarily due to the heavy-handedness of the self-appointed board members and the medical director. Internal conflicts and a lack of management support have led to a high rate of burnout among our dedicated volunteers. Our Paramedic program is in disarray, with recent months witnessing the departure or dismissal of Rabbis, Board Members, paramedics, EMTs, and donors, due to concerns over organizational mismanagement thus exacerbating an already dire situation.
We understand the trust you have placed in us, and it is our duty to be transparent with you. We take pride in our service to the community and appreciate your ongoing support. We urge you to inquire directly with volunteer members about their experiences and the transparency of the leadership. It is crucial to assess whether the current unelected structure serves the best interests of the community or fosters a climate of fear and mistrust among members.
We will continue to provide updates until meaningful change is achieved. We hope for a resolution that reinstates faith in the organization and restores its commitment to community-driven governance.
If you wish to show your support, we encourage you to contact Medical Director Yoram Gutfreund at 917-596-9387; or unelected, self-appointed "Board Member" Baruch Sandhaus at 786-626-6261. Implore them to adhere to the organization's bylaws and facilitate elections for a new board, ensuring accountability and restoring confidence in our beloved institution.
