Mediation Between AgriStar and The CHK Breaks Down Over The Issue of Other Hashgachos

The news broke this past Thursday that mediation between AgriStar Meats and The CHK had begun, while in truth, they had already collapsed. The talks, highly anticipated in the Crown Heights community with the hope of preventing a meat shortage or an increase in prices with Pesach approaching, ended abruptly just two weeks after they started.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, efforts to broker peace between AgriStar and the CHK commenced shortly after the CHK announced their unexpected decision to sever ties with AgriStar, incidentally via an email sent at 12:05am. When an intermediary approached AgriStar hoping to “mend fences”, they readily agreed, expressing their desire to avoid conflict with the CHK.

However, complications arose during negotiations.

While reaching an agreement on kosher standards seemed feasible, Agri wanted the standard to be uniform, meaning policies upheld equally across all CHK meats. For instance, the CHK had requested inspections for Tzomet Hagidim be done in a specific way. Open to the idea in principle, AgriStar maintained that should this new policy be implemented, the implementation should be uniform for all CHK suppliers, including David Elliot, who is still under the CHK but currently operates under the previous CHK policy, the same policy that the CHK are demanding that Agri change. Tensions escalated even more when the CHK insisted that any other Lubavitcher hechsher on any Agri meat was unacceptable, and demanded the removal of Lamed-K from the plant entirely.

The CHK kosher division of the Crown Heights Beis Din has been working overtime to avoid a meat and poultry shortage for those relying on their certified products, while in talks to possibly continue working with Agri Star Meat and Poultry in Postville, Iowa.

The CHK kosher division of the Crown Heights Beis Din has been working overtime to avoid a meat and poultry shortage for those relying on their certified products.

They have asked David Elliot Poultry Farm based in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to up their production. This past Sunday, CHK had 2 Lubavitch shochtim slaughter meat at Solomon’s Meat plant in Nebraska.

“I don’t foresee a huge shortage,” CHK Kashrus Director Rabbi Yosef Kirszenberg told COLlive.com this week. “Everyone is doing their best to make it available. There may be a few days gap in the supply of chicken.”

The race against time was triggered by CHK’s sudden notice on March 7, 2024, that they are terminating their certification of Agri Star Meat and Poultry in Postville, Iowa, the largest kosher meat plant in North America.

Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba and Rabbi Yosef Braun, who oversee CHK, cited a “strained relationship and inconsistent adherence to proper procedures (that) have created an environment detrimental to our kashrus supervision” at Agri Star.

Agri Star and its supervising kashrus authority Rabbi Menachem Meir Weissmandl deny these claims. They said it may be related to Agri Star working with a new Lubavitch kashrus agency headed by Rabbi Shlomo Segal, formerly of CHK.

The Lamed-K certification which to be a national Chabad organization has since certified the Lubavitch shechita production of the Shor Habor label at Agri Star.

Owners of restaurants and grocery stores and caterers in Crown Heights received the news in shock. “Agri is the best meat out there,” one of them told COLlive.com on condition of anonymity. “Everything was going fairly smoothly. This is such a pity.”

The person said that food establishments certified by the CHK aren’t allowed to use non-CHK meat. On the other hand, there are products and cold-cuts that no other company produces on a grand scale, like Agri Star.

Rabbi Kirszenberg states that all Agri products that bear a CHK symbol are permissible to eat.

(Update to article) He added that the cold cuts such as salami, turkey, corned beef, and pastrami are Kosher L’Pesach if they are marked KFP.

Agri Star stated: “The deli must bear a KFP label; otherwise, it’s not kosher for Passover.”

Other alternative meat and poultry sources, in addition to Solomon’s and David Elliot, are Uruguayan meat by Yossi Rubashkin’s Stonehill Group and Generation 7 Springfield Distributors.

But COLlive has learned that the door wasn’t fully shut on CHK and Agri Star. At least 3 separate sources confirmed that there have been ongoing talks between CHK Rabbis and executives of Agri Star, with the help of intermediaries.

“The CHK had a long-standing working relationship with Agri and the community of Postville, so we’re trying to figure out and see if it can work,” one source said.

A source at Agri Star has said they have been planning for a while to move the Shor Habor label to a national Chabad supervision while creating a new and smaller label for the CHK products. It remains to be seen if the offer still stands.

Sources at Agri Star and CHK refused to elaborate on the topic or comment on the discussions and their progress.

The media decided to defend Sen. Schumer’s attack on Israel — in which he calls to spare Hamas and create a terrorist state — by rushing out his “rabbi,” Rachel Timoner, to claim that “he said what most of us think” and “what the overwhelming majority of American Jews are saying to each other.”
“There’s been a real fear in the American Jewish community of criticizing Israel,” she told Politico. “He did something so great in breaking that silence.”
Timoner is an activist with such anti-Israel groups as J Street and T’ruah and co-founded the New York Jewish Agenda leftist organization alongside Sharon Kleinbaum (wife of American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten), who faced an exodus from her “temple” (Manhattan’s Congregation Beit Simchat Torah) after saying Kaddish for Hamas terrorists.
Bringing out Timoner, the clergywoman of the leftist Congregation Beth Elohim near Schumer’s home in Park Slope, doesn’t help him. It reveals how bad he really is.
“Schumer has attended Timoner’s synagogue … for at least a decade,” Politico reported. “Timoner officiated [at] his daughter’s wedding, blessed his three grandchildren and buried his father.”

Timoner took part in a recent anti-Israel “ceasefire” rally while whining that “continued war and Israeli occupation of Gaza will be an unmitigated disaster.”
She signed on to a letter by the T’ruah anti-Israel hate group which claimed that “there is no military solution” and demanded that Biden “ensure that Israel does not invade Rafah” and finish off Hamas.
In the past, Timoner had signed on to a T’ruah/J Street letter defending BDS.
Timoner, the author of op-eds such as “Fellow Dykes: We Must Be Both Pro-Israel And Pro-Palestine,” tries to have it both ways, but she picked her side.

This is what Schumer embraced as his guiding spiritual light.
A mere few weeks after the Hamas atrocities, Timoner was already scolding Israel in a sermon, warning that “killing thousands of Palestinian civilians will not bring back the Israeli civilians.”
She repeated the same message in a New York Times op-ed.
T’ruah summed up Timoner’s remarks at one anti-Israel rally as, “American Jews must tell our government we oppose this war and want an end to the occupation and a real political solution for Palestinians and Israelis.”

Uri Moyal, a man in his 50s, was critically injured from stab wounds in his neck and stomach. Paramedics carried out resuscitation techniques on him while evacuating him to Soroka Hospital.

The terrorist approached the victim from behind and stabbed him. The victim managed to pull out his gun and shoot and neutralize the terrorist before succumbing to his wounds.

Moyal was born and raised in Yeruham and moved to live in Dimona. He served as a senior sergeant in Nahal.

A 65-year-old man was also injured but fortunately is in light condition from a stab wound in his leg.

A large number of police forces arrived at the scene. There are concerns that another terrorist may be in the area.
