Two extremist Jews have now been criminally charged in the July 31 arson-murders that killed an 18-month-old Palestinian baby and his sleeping parents in the West Bank Palestinian village of Douma (Duma).
At the scene of the arson, police found the words “revenge” and "long live the Messiah" spray-painted on the torched home of the Dawabsheh family. An eyewitness to the arson saw four men thought to be Jewish settlers fleeing the scene toward the nearby Ma'aleh Ephraim Jewish settlement.
According to a report in Ha’aretz, those criminally charged today are:
• 21-year-old Amiram Ben Uliel Jerusalem was charged with three counts of murder.
• An unnamed minor was charged as an accessory to murder.
• Two unnamed others, both apparently minors, were charged with committing violent acts against Palestinians.
The case is still under a gag order.
Israel’s Justice Minister, Ayelet Shaked of the right-wing pro-settlements HaBayit HaYehudi Party reportedly told journalists at today's cabinet meeting that she hopes the charged suspects will receive a fair and just trial.
But when asked by reporter is she trusts the court she essentially supervises, Shaked refused to answer and refused to say whether or not she believes the suspects will receive a fair trial.
Shaked has no real legal training and is not a scholar of the legal system or an ethicist. Nonetheless, she has spent much of her time in government trying to limit the power of the courts and proposing other legislation widely seen in the West as anti-democratic.
