People want to be religious, says scholar Karen Armstrong, so we should help make religion a force for harmony. She advocates for a Charter for Compassion to restore the Golden Rule as the central global religious doctrine. The Golden Rule is found in almost all religions, for example: Hillel the Elder's statement "what is hateful to you do not do to your fellow; this is the whole Torah," Jesus's "do to others what you would want them to do to you," Mohammed's "wish for your brother what you wish for yourself," and Buddha's "hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful."
