A national emergency meeting for heads of haredi girls schools in Israel has just begin in Bnei Brak, Yeshiva World reported.
The meeting – jointly called by the Education Committees of the Councils of Torah Sages of both the hasidic Agudath Israel faction and the non-hasidic Degel HaTorah faction, the two factions that together make up the Ashkenazi haredi United Torah Judaism Party (UTJ) – is meant to address “unwanted” government involvement in haredi education.
UTJ’s #2 non-hasidic rabbi, Chaim Kanievsky, and the Vishnitzer Rebbe are both scheduled to speak at the meeting, which began at 7:30 pm Israel Time at 25 Rashbam Street in Bnei Brak .
Top haredi rabbis oppose any government interference in haredi education. As a general rule, they oppose secular studies of any kind for boys and only allow very limited secular studies for girls.
The government, which funds these semi-official haredi schools, is trying to get the schools to teach large parts of Israel’s core curriculum, especially math, English, and computer usage.
