A disputed monthly march around the gates of the Temple Mount, known as Sivuv Shearim (“Encircling the Gates”) is staged monthly by a group of Zionist Orthodox teens. Ha’aretz reported the march took place last took place last night without major incident.
But at last month’s march, which marked the 14-year anniversary of Sivuv Shearim, police stopped left-wing activists from videoing the march, including by putting their hands and bodies over the camera lenses.
Marchers have previously been videotaped chanting racist slogans including “the mosque will burn” – a reference to their desired outcome for the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is located on the Temple Mount and is the holiest site in Israel for Muslims.
The left-wing activists petitioned the High Court of Justice to ask it to order police to allow them get close enough to march to properly document and video it. During the hearing on their petition, police promised to let them video the march from “a reasonable proximity.”
Last night’s march had no racist songs or chants, and witnesses reportedly said police made an effort to immediately restore the Muslim Quarter to “normalcy” when the march was completed, in part apparently by preventing the teens from roaming through the streets of Muslim Quarter in packs.
The stated purpose of Sivuv Shearim is to fulfill the biblical verse “encircle Zion and march around her, count her towers" (Psalms 48:13) and the biblical verse “you should seek to cause Him to dwell and you will come there" (Deuteronomy 12:5), which is interpreted to mean that if Jews act to cause God to dwell in the ancient Jerusalem Temple – which was located on the Temple Mount in area now occupied by a mosque – then Jews may go to the ancient Jerusalem Temple to pray.
