A large effigy of a haredi soldier with the head and face of a dog was paraded last night in the massive haredi protest-turned-riot against drafting haredim into the IDF, Arutz Sheva reported.
Four alleged haredi rioters were arrested and police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Thousands of haredi men - largely hasidim linked to the vehemently anti-Zionist Edah Haredit haredi umbrella organization and men and younger yeshiva students linked to Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach’s non-hasidic Ashkenazi haredi rebel faction that broke away from the “mainstream” United Torah Judaism Party several years ago – participated in the more peaceful part of the protest, which then descended into rioting.
Over the past two years, haredi IDF soldiers have repeatedly been assaulted in Mea Shearim and in other haredi areas of Israel, and the home addresses and personal home phone numbers of haredim who serve in the IDF have been published together with material that incites violence against them. So far, police have made few arrests regarding the actual violence and no arrests related to the incitement.
