Guess who’s home for Shabbos.
The man who stole millions of dollars from New York City’s Jewish poor, the poster boy for Lower East Side Modern Orthodoxy William E. “Slick Willie” Rapfogel, that’s who.
In 2014, the politically-connected Rapfogel pleaded guilty to heading a conspiracy that stole $9 million – the actual amount is likely far higher – from the Jewish community’s anti-poverty arm, the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty and was sentenced to 3-1/3 to 10 years in state prison.
But Rapfogel only served 14 months of the sentence before being sent to work release in Manhattan about a month ago.
And now, for the first time since being sent away, Rapfogel will be home with his wife at their Lower East Side apartment for Shabbos, the Daily News reported.
Rapfogel will get regular furloughs like this for now and will eventually work up to getting almost four full days each and every week home with his spouse – an extended weekend away from work release.
“Inmates are granted these provisions based on positive transition into the work release programs and are strictly monitored,” a prison official told the Daily News in an email.
The days Rapfogel isn’t home fressing with his wife Judy, he’ll continue to sleep in the Lincoln Correctional Facility across from Central Part in the now-gentrified Haarlem neighborhood of Manhattan where each day he will get dressed in business clothes and go to a new paying job at a real estate company.
Rapfogel is also back on Facebook and changed his profile picture Wednesday, reportedly his first Facebook activity (at least for that Facebook account) since 2013.
