A young ex-haredi woman who worked as a shift supervisor for King Slice Pizza in the Jerusalem’s Bukharian Quarter for more than two years says she was fired because she is a woman, Yeshiva World reported based on a report in MyNet.
The pizza shop’s owner admits he fired the young woman after the rabbis of the kosher supervision Badatz Yerushalayim, which is an arm of the vehemently anti-Zionist haredi umbrella organization Edah Haredit, told him in a letter that having a woman work in the shop was “not in line with the character of the community.”
The woman’s haredi parents owned the store until they sold it to the new owner, who kept her on because she know the store’s operation. And by all accounts she was very good and responsible employee in every way.
“My parents are haredi but I do not view myself as haredi. Nevertheless, I always reported to work in long sleeves and a skirt to my knees. If anything was ever said regarding my attire, I always become more stringent. This does not bother me for I know it is work and one does what one has to. However, no one told me anything and they simply came to me and said ‘go home, you’re done,’” the young woman told MyNet.
She is now suing the new owner for discrimination.
