Voters who live in the 164-acre parcel of land the Satmar hasidic village of Kiryas Joel, New York wants to annex from its neighbor, the town of Monroe, voted for the annexation by a better than 3 to 1 margin yesterday, the MidHudson News reported.
The vote was 40 to 12 for the annexation.
The population of the entire town of Monroe as a whole, however, is thought to oppose the annexation even though the sitting town council has already approved it.
A recent court action brought by annexation opponents resulted in a judicial order that halts transfer of the land until all legal challenges to the annexation have been resolved.
Kiryas Joel is the second poorest municipality in the entire United States. It is also very high-density with large families crowded into closely packed homes and townhomes. Monroe and surrounding communities are much lower density and much wealthier.
