Late Monday night Israel time, the Knesset passed the second and third and final readings of a bill to amend the haredi military draft law.
The amendment, which pushed off the mandatory draft of haredi yeshiva students until at least 2023, is now law.
49 coalition lawmakers voted for the amendment while 36 opposition members voted against, the Jerusalem Post reported. All other Knesset members (including, apparently, all Israeli-Arab lawmakers) either abstained or were absent.
All Jewish non-haredi Israelis still must do mandatory IDF or civilian national service, and failure to do so can lead to a prison sentence.
Haredim are not only exempt from the IDF draft, they’re also exempted from civilian national service, as well.
