Over 40 torah scrolls, many of unknown provenance but at least seven definitely known to be stolen, have been discovered by police in a sofer’s (Orthodox religious scribe’s) office in Jerusalem, Ynet reported.
The sofer, who has not been named, is accused of buying the Torahs from questionable sources and reselling them after repairs, knowing they were either stolen of questionable provenance.
Two brothers from the northern city of Tiberias have been indicted for stealing the scrolls.
Police are still trying to determine the provenance of the majority of the scrolls so they may be returned to their rightful owners.
