Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto has six more days to return to Israel and go to prison or he will forfeit a 3 million shekel (about $780,000) bond, Israeli Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg has now ruled.
The Sefardi haredi kabbalist, who pleaded guilty to bribery and related charges but who was allowed to go to the US to receive medical treatment before serving his sentence, must return to Israel by Monday, October 26. Pinto must also file a copy of his plane ticket with the court by this Thursday, Arutz Sheva reported.
Pinto’s followers have leaked photos of Pinto lying in a hospital bed, allegedly too seriously ill to travel. However, Pinto has allegedly repeatedly exaggerated the seriousness of his medical condition over the course of the legal proceedings against him and has repeatedly failed to provide the court in a timely fashion with medical documentation to back up his claims.
Pinto is one of the top ten richest Israeli rabbis with a net worth estimated in the tens of millions of dollars. Most of that money allegedly came from his role as a 'kabblist' and 'spiritual adviser' who provided business advice to wealthy businesspeople and top politicians. But Pinto has also been linked to a massive embezzlement from a now-defunct nonprofit that purportedly fed elderly Holocaust survivors.
