Mimon Himy and his son Dan, who had just begun serving his hitch in the IDF, were sitting at an outdoor café in the main square in the Israeli coastal town of Netanya trying to have a beer when all hell broke loose. Shouts of “Terrorist! Terrorist!” and “Death to the Arabs!” suddenly filled the air and the 58-year-old self-described right-wing Zionist Orthodox Jew and his teenage son leapt up and ran toward the screaming, intending to stop what they thought was an ongoing Palestinian terror attack against Jews.

Mimon Himy and his son Dan, who had just begun serving his hitch in the IDF, were sitting at an outdoor café in the main square in the Israeli coastal town of Netanya trying to have a beer when all hell broke loose. Shouts of “Terrorist! Terrorist!” and “Death to the Arabs!” suddenly filled the air and the 58-year-old self-described right-wing Zionist Orthodox Jew and his teenage son leapt up and ran toward the screaming, intending to stop what they thought was an ongoing Palestinian terror attack against Jews, Ha'aretz reported. Neither man was armed, so Dan Himy grabbed a café chair and took it with him to use as a weapon.
“We wanted “to kill the terrorist and protect the Jews,” Mimon Himy said.
But when the Himy and son got to the site of the supposed terror attack, they saw an unarmed Israeli Arab man, face bloody, arms held up in surrender, trying to escape a mob of more than 30 right-wing racist Jews, some drunk, some directionless teens.
“There was this Arab running away from the mob with his hands in the air, and no weapon. His face was battered and bloody. I realized this was no terror attack,” Mimon Himy said.
Himny tried to stop the mob from killing Jamal and ended up having to throw himself on top of Jamal to save his life.
“This was an act of pure hatred and the perpetrators were acting like animals,” Himy said.
Five members of the mob were arrested and Netanya’s mayor spoke out against the racist attack.
“My main objective…was to save Jews,” Himy said. “And actually, I realized later that was exactly what I did – I saved those Jews from themselves.”
But Himy’s wife is upset he interceded to save the innocent Arab man, and while he has become a bit of media celebrity in Israel for his heroism, a number of social media commenters have reportedly urged the right-wing Zionist Orthodox Mimon to “go back to Gaza.”
