A mob of right wing Jewish extremists affiliated with the Jewish Defense League, which was founded by the late extremist Rabbi Meir Kahane, attacked and beat a prominent French journalist in Paris Thursday night, the Guardian reported.
Armed with clubs, the Jewish mob beat David Perrotin, a reporter for BuzzFeed, outside the offices of Agence France-Presse (AFP). The Ligue de Défense Juive (JDL) staged a protest there against what they believe to be biased coverage by the AFP of the crisis in Israel and the West Bank.
About 100 JDL members, some masked, many brandishing JDL flags on sticks like weapons and setting off flares, tried to storm the AFP’s offices.
“We’re coming to get you![You’re] Islamic terrorists! [You’re] collaborators!” the mob yelled at the journalists.
At that point, riot police used tear gas to try to stop the mob’s assault and to disperse it, and some of the rioters fought with police.
Perrotin was standing nearby tweeting what he was seeing. A rioter approached him.
“I warned the LDJ [JDL] that you’re here Mr Perrotin,” the rioter said, according to a tweet written by Perrotin at the time.
Soon after, Perrotin – who had previously written about JDL violence and thuggery – was surrounded by a dozen masked JDL men who threatened him with batons and began clubbing him.
Perrotin escaped and found shelter behind police lines.
In June 2014, two French JDL members – one of whom fled to Israel and is still presumed to be there – were convicted of placing a bomb under the car of an anti-Zionist journalist.
According to the Guardian, the French JDL has also staged attacks on pro-Palestinian pundits and politicians, ransacked bookshops and exhibitions, and disrupted fundraising events it disagrees with.
“We are here to show our support for Israel in our war against the Arabs,” one of the rioters at the anti-AFP protest told the Guardian. “Journalists working for organizations like AFP support the Islamic terrorists and that’s why we have to fight back.”
The JDL denies any wrongdoing in the AFP/Perrotin attack.
