A New York doctor treating kabbalist and convicted felon Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto allegedly wrote a letter to Israel's Supreme Court explaining why Pinto cannot return to Israel to serve his 1-year prison sentence given to Pinto in a plea deal for bribing a senior police officer. Is the letter real? Was it written without financial inducement or extortion? Was this letter even submitted to the Supreme Court? Take a look and decide for yourself.
But is the letter real? Was it written without financial inducement or extortion? Was this letter even submitted to the Supreme Court?
The letter has been posted on haredi news websites favorable to Pinto, including Yeshiva World. I enlarged the letter, sharpened its focus and adjusted its color to make it easier to read. I also removed the second Yeshiva World watermark to make the bottom right corner of the letter square.
Note the letter does not say Pinto has cancer – something a physician would certainly write if it were true – and does not say what the nature was of Pinto's prostate surgery.
Even though the image of the letter is likely a cellphone photo (and definitely not from a scanner), it appears that the text is not plumb to the paper, which leads me to believe the image may have been forged from a cellphone photo of a different letter. But I could easily be wrong.
Pinto is – allegedly – supposed to return to Israel today or will forfeit his almost $800,000 bond.
Here's the color and sharpness adjusted version followed by the unadjusted version. Take a look and decide for yourself.
