Crown Heights Watch: New Series Of Robberies And Assaults By Extreme Chabad Messianists Against…Less Extreme Chabad Messianists

Ugly Chabad-on-Chabad violence has erupted again in Crown Heights.
The 749 Eastern Parkway dorm of the main Chabad-Lubavitch yeshiva located at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn is notorious for the bad behavior of some of its residents.
But that bad behavior reached a new low last week when, after a series of beatings and robberies committed against a student, allegedly by fellow students at the yeshiva who are extreme Chabad messianists from Israel, a gang of those Israeli extreme messianists, many of them masked, allegedly attacked the student with metal bars and severely beat him while covering his mouth with a towel, Crown Heights dot info reported.
“We should kill you because you are a snitch, you went to the cops and put someone in jail,” the mob of mostly masked messianists reportedly shouted while beating the yeshiva student, according to court papers.
The student’s screams were so loud, neighbors several houses away heard them and, believing someone had been hurt in accident, called Hatzolah. Hatzolah’s sirens scared the attackers, who fled.
Meanwhile, as soon as the attackers fled, the victim went to friend’s house and called 911. Police responded and took the victim back to the dorm to point out any of the students involved in the attack.
The victim pointed out 21-year-old Yossef Nachum, an Israeli, who was supposed to be a student at the yeshiva this year but was expelled and his visa to be in the US was revoked after he allegedly attacked Rabbi Chaim Boruch Halberstam on Kingston Avenue. Nachum was arrested and charged with felony robbery, burglary and assault.
Police also arrested 22-year-old Yonah Shifren of Los Angeles for allegedly robbing and assaulting the student in a bid to try to force the student to vacate his room. Shifren is charged with robbery, felony burglary and assault involving three separate robbery incidents against the victim, including one in which Shifren and unknown accomplices allegedly stole the student’s tefillin.
In the last robbery incident before the final beating, Shifren and his accomplices allegedly left a rifle bullet on the student’s pillow as a warning.
Some of the robberies were reportedly captured on security camera footage and Shifren allegedly is pictured in it.
Shifren was released on $1,500 bail.
Nachum was released on his own recognizance and allegedly fled to Israel Monday on a commercial airline.
According to Crown Heights dot info, Nachum’s and Shifren’s attorney is Paul (Levi) Huebner.
Huebner, Nachum and Shifren were reportedly seen returning to Crown Heights at 11:00pm Friday night in Huebner’s car. Hubner dropped off his clients at the main Chabad-Lubavitch synagogue at 770 Eastern Parkway, where the two men joined a group of their friends and began singing “Didan Notzach” – a song meant to commemorate Chabad-Lubavitch court victories in fight to retain control over books belonging to the 6th Lubavitch Rebbe’s family – and dancing.
The messianist/anti-messianist split in Chabad is not over whether the late Chabad-Lubavitch Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson is or will be the messiah. Instead, the split is largely over whether or not Chabad should promote the late rebbe as the messiah even that hurts donations and outreach efforts.
Among the more extreme messianists, those from Israel – especially those known as Tzfasniks – are generally the most extreme, with some believing the Rebbe, who died in 1994, is still alive in every sense and meaning of the word. They also are more prone to violence inside Chabad, which they consider to be fighting the “wars of the of the Rebbe.”
