The Home of the Sages of Israel can't be sold until groups objecting to the sale, including shul members and the New York State Attorney General's office, get answers through discovery to questions they have about the legality of the supposed board and the sale. The purported board members live too far away to walk to shul, and the bulk of the sale's proceeds – $10 million – were slated to go to the Gur (Gerrer) hasidic movement in Israel, not to help aging Jews in New York City. The Gur hasidic rabbi, Samuel Aschkenazi, behind the alleged looting has a small synagogue in the garage of his expensive house in Queens. The remainder of the sale proceeds – $3 million – were slated to go there. The Home of the Sages, the only Lower East Side synagogue with a wheelchair ramp, would be demolished is the sale goes through.
