The Satmar hasid who threw bleach in the eye of anti-child-sex-abuse activist Rabbi Nuchem Rosenberg in December 2012, only hours after Satmar bigwig Nechemia Weberman was convicted on child sex abuse charges, got a no-jail plea deal last year because, Brooklyn prosecutors working for DA Kenneth Thompson claimed, the damage he did to Rosenberg’s eye was not permanent – a contention that was not backed up by any actual medical evidence. Prosecutors hinted Rosenberg was exaggerating his injuries and said the no-plea deal was in line with other similar cases. But it wasn't. And now Rosenberg is suing.

Now it’s a lawsuit.
But those supposedly similar cases largely turned out to be cases in which minors old enough to be charged as adults, threw bleach or another caustic substance in the face of another minor who had ‘stolen’ their boyfriend or committed some other similar offense. Those no-jail plea deals often involved extensive longterm mental health counseling and other steps meant to deal with problematic behaviors before they turn violent.
In Rosenberg’s case the assailant, Meilich Schnitzler, was an adult well over the age of majority, and none of those therapies were part of the plea deal or ordered by the court.
Schnitzler was sentenced to five years probation despite Rosenberg’s strong objections to the exceedingly light sentence.
In a lawsuit against Schnitzler reportedly filed yesterday, Rosenberg claims that Schnitzler caused severe and permanent damage to his eye, damage that causes constant pain and which has rendered Rosenberg substantially disabled. Rosenberg is reportedly seeking compensation and damages, along with court costs.
Rosenberg was excommunicated by Satmar and other Williamsburg-based hasidic groups in 2008 for his work exposing hasidic pedophiles.
Rosenberg had been attacked several times before the 2012 bleach attack, most notoriously in 2008 when he hit with a projectile though to be a bullet.
