Alana Shultz was a program director at the Modern Sephardic Orthodox Congregation Shearith Israel in Manhattan since 2004. But Schultz was fired because she got pregnant out of wedlock, violating the synagogue’s alleged morals, the New York Post reported.
Shearith Israel’s membership is made up primarily of wealthy legacy memberships paid for by families who have not been Orthodox for decades, and sometimes for several generations.
Nonetheless the synagogue’s rabbi, Meir Soloveichik, fired Shultz, who married when she was 6½ months pregnant, when she returned to work on July 21 after her honeymoon.
Shultz hired an attorney and the synagogue reportedly tried to rehire her to prevent a lawsuit.
But Shultz didn’t fall for it. She filed suit against the synagogue Tuesday in Manhattan federal court.
