Increasingly, haredim, especially in Israel, are becoming ever more distanced from work, to a point that holding a job in the modern day workforce is openly frowned on, as this haredi cartoon flyer seems meant to show.
This was posted in a prominent Borough Park, Brooklyn hasidic synagogue.
The old man says, "What are you doing in the garbage?!"
The young man replies: "Nu... It's for parnassah [livelihood]."
The strip of bold text on the left says, "For the Sake of A Livelihood"
The young man is rolling around in the garbage to collect a few cans to redeem for cash when he really should be learning Torah. The implication is apparently supposed to be that the garbage is really smartphones, computers, the Internet, etc., and the young man is ruining his life 'rummaging' with them. (Of course, it could also be understood as the old man being shocked that the policies of top haredi and hasidic rabbis have impoverished a whole generation of young haredim, but that doesn't appear to be the author's intent.)
