An Australian source writes (with a few edits for clarity by FailedMessiah.com):
This Shabbat the main minyan at Chabad’s Yeshivah Centre in Melbourne auctioned off the Torah honors for Rosh Hashanah.
To make it kosher to do this on Shabbat before Rosh Hashana, Chabad auctioned off Maftir for today’s Shabbat Nitzavim Torah reading, as well.
Dr. John Barry Myers, who earlier this year rather publicly had his license to practice suspended for five years after allegedly sexually abusing female patients, purchased that honor for $200.
This begs the question: What sort of behavior is sufficiently inappropriate to disqualify a person from getting or buying maftir or some other synagogue honor at [Chabad’s] Yeshivah Centre? Is there some financial threshold barring these honors that $200 that overcomes?
Meanwhile, Rabbi Zvi Hirsh Telsner, who resigned from his position as Yeshivah Centre’s top rabbi last week after more of his abusive behavior toward victims of child sex abuse at Chabad became public, prayed in his usual minyan today. He sat in a different seat than usual, a seat belonging to Rabbi Joseph Gutnick which Gutnick keeps but never uses [because he’s rarely in the country].
It was business as usual. I don't see any hint of Rabbi Telsner being shunned in the community [unlike several of the abuse victims and their families, who are shunned and harassed]. It was just like any other Shabbat.
