The existing system of admissions tests and other requirements – like barring all girls from admission who come from homes in which both parents or the father works (outside the haredi educational system) – has been repeatedly used to discriminate against Sefardi girls. The Council of Torah Sages of the hasidic Agudath Israel faction of the Ashkenazi haredi United Torah Judaism Party announced its absolute opposition to geographic-based admission for haredi girls high schools, Yeshiva World reported. That type of admission system would compel haredi girls high schools to accept any girl who lives within its catchment if she graduated from a haredi girls grammar school.
The existing non-geographic system of admissions tests and other requirements – like barring all girls from admission who come from homes in which both parents or the father works (outside the haredi educational system) – has been repeatedly been used to discriminate against Sefardi girls.
Nonetheless, the Council of Torah Sages ordered that discriminatory system remain in place, which likely means Israel’s High Court of Justice will eventually have to issue another ruling against these haredi schools.
When that last happened several years ago, hasidic parents at the particular school refused to comply with the High Court’s orders and were jailed, sparking haredi riots and large haredi demonstrations against the court and against the government.
