Israel’s Internal Security Agency (the Shabak or, as it’s more commonly known, by it’s initials Shin Bet) arrested Israel’s “most wanted Jewish terrorist” Meir Ettinger Monday night, Ha’aretz reported. Ettinger is a grandson of the late extremist Rabbi Meir Kahane, who was viewed by both the US and Israel (and by several other Western countries) as a terorist.
Ettinger, who is 24-years-old, allegedly ramped up his anti-Arab activity last year by planning a series of violent attacks against Palestinians with aim of causing widespread unrest among Palestinians. In turn, Ettinger planned to use that unrest and the Israeli reaction to it to overthrow the government of Israel.
Last year the Shin Bet wanted permission to put Ettinger in administrative detention. State Prosecutor Shai Nitzan reportedly denied that request and instead allowed a restraining order to be issued against Ettinger that forbid him from being anywhere in Jerusalem or the West Bank. Because of that restraining order, Ettinger moved to Sefat in northern Israel.
After last week’s hate crime arson attack on an occupied Arab home in the West Bank village of Douma in which killed an 18-month-old baby was killed and the rest of his family seriously injured, Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon orderd the Shin Bet to put a number of right-wing activists believed to be involved in attacks against Arab civilians in administrative detention. Ettinger is one of those people.
If Ettinger does not cooperate with police now thathe has been arrested, he will likely be put in administrative detention indefinitely, pending a judge’s approval.
The Shin Bet says Ettinger is the person who heads the terror group that burned the Catholic the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes, located on the shore Seal of Galilee not far from Sefat, in June.
Ettinger denies any involvement in that hate crime and claims there is no Jewish terror underground in Israel. But, Ettinger wrote on his blog before being arrested, there are “lots and lots of Jews, many more than one might think” who may have carried out the attacks.
“Whoever made up this lie [about a Jewish terror underground] knows better than anyone else that his remarks were lies,” Ettinger wrote, “and the Shin Bet understands that all of the activities they are looking into aren’t stemming from some kind of ‘organization’ but rather just happening on the ground, fueled by the most simple, popular insights that motivated people to feel that they need to take action, that kind of evil spirit that emanates from the establishment. The truth must be told. There is no terror organization, but there are many, many Jews, many more than one might think, whose value systems are very different than those of the Supreme Court or the Shin Bet, and are not bound the ignorant laws of the state, but rather by laws much more eternal, from the source of the living water.…
“The important struggle over the Land of Israel must be joined with another, real struggle against the government’s sin of allowing idol worship to happen here, particularly mosques and churches, in the Land of Israel, where the sound of church bells interferes with the sound of Torah and prayers,” Ettinger continued. “The State of Israel added insult to injury by detaining two Jews suspected of torching the church. [The Jewish principle of] mutual responsibility obligates all to pitch in, and not to forget the suspects who are being held for all of us. We must amplify the struggle against the desecration the state allows by funding and aiding idol worship in the Holy Land.”
Israel's Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan reportedly told Israel Radio Monday just hours before Ettinger's arrest that the Jewish terrorists who carried out last Friday’s deadly firebomb attack on a sleeping Palestinian family in the West Bank village of Douma are “extremist, anarchist, religious [i.e. Zionist Orthodox and/or haredi],” who believe that the country’s laws do not apply to them.
Erdan also said Sunday’s decision to apply administrative detention to Jewish terror suspects – it has used administrative detention against Palestinian terror suspects for decades – will give the Shin Bet and the state security forces, including the IDF, the tools they need to effectively fight Jewish terrorism.
Meir Ettinger was named after his grandfather Rabbi Meir Kahane, who was assassinated in 1990.
