A Sefardi man in the town of Rechasim reportedly committed suicide yesterday after a haredi school refused to accept his 5-year-old daughter as a student.
The man, who was about 50-years-old, found out yesterday morning that his youngest daughter’s rejection by the Ashkenazi haredi school was final. He no one else to appeal to, no where else to turn for help.
A man identified only by the initial “H” knew the man and reportedly told Lada’at News that while the rejection may not have been the only cause of the suicide, it was the last straw.
“It is a mafia here in Rechasim. I will not give my name for if I do I will be a dead man. Tomorrow my daughter will be thrown out of school and they will make sure to ruin my life and that of my family,” H said. “I knew [the dead man] well. He was about 50, normative as you, fine. His older daughters are married and now his little one was going into first grade. However in the morning he learned she was not accepted [into the Bais Yaakov school]. There may have been other factors, but there is no doubt this is the straw that broke the camel’s back. He had no one to turn to and those he asked for help did not assist him.”
After a search the man’s body was was found in his vehicle near in Kfar Hasidim, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
At his funeral, family members lashed out at the haredi community of Rechasim.
“Do not say ‘my hands did not spill this blood,’” one family member said.
