The principal of the Bais Yaakov HaYoshon haredi girls high school in Jerusalem faced a tough hearing at the Education Ministry and punishing sanctions after he refused to accept 21 girls, almost all Sefardim, assigned to the school by the City of Jerusalem’s haredi education division.
Instead of appearing at the hearing, Rabbi Yisroel Levine sued the ministry in secular Jerusalem District Court to try to keep the 21 girls out of his 'elite' Ashkenazi haredi school.
But the court rejected Levine’s claims out of hand. According to a report in Yeshiva World, it refused to issue a temporary injunction to stop ministry enforcement against Levine and ordered Levine and the Bais Yaakov school to register every one of the 21 girls by the end of today.
It was clear the court was completely unsympathetic to Levine’s position, and the school’s attorney told the court the school would immediately comply with the court’s order rather than attempting to prolong the court battle. Each of the 21 girls would be admitted to the school and would be informed of their acceptance today, the attorney promised.
