It was close to midnight when a two-year-old boy was found alone and asleep in a public park near the beach in the Israeli city of Netanya Wednesday night, Yeshiva World reported.
Police launched a search for the child’s family and waited, thinking and hoping the family would soon contact police and report their young son missing. But the hours ticked by and, despite public announcements, no one called.
Then at 11:00 am Thursday, almost eleven hours after police took the sleeping child from the park, the family finally called police to report their toddler son missing.
Upon investigation, police discovered the parents who called them are the head of a Jerusalem haredi family that has 10 children. The family was vacationing in Netanya and went to the beach. They split up – the report isn’t clear about why but the likely reason is to maintain gender-separate swimming – with each parent taking five children. In the process, they lost the toddler, but apparently did not realize it.
It was only when they woke up late Thursday morning that they realized their toddler son was missing – more than 11 hours after they actually lost him.
Police detained the parents for questioning and social services is reportedly involved in the case.
