A felony first-degree child sexual abuse charge against Shlomo Erps, a hasidic school bus driver in Monsey, New York, was essentially dropped Friday after prosecutors told a court they could not prove their case, the Journal News reported.
Erps was charged in June after a 4-year-old boy accused Erps of molesting him on the school bus Erps was driving for Talmud Torah Khal Adas Yereim.
Friday, prosecutors asked the Spring Valley Village Court for an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal, which means the case against Erps will be closed in 6 months on January 29 as long as he is not charged with any other crimes. At that time, Erps will also be able to ask to have the arrest record sealed.
Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe did not respond to a request from the Journal News for comment.
After Erps was arrested, Talmud Torah Khal Adas Yereim said it suspended Erps immediately after it was notified of Erps’ arrest.
The “administration did not outright fire the driver because he is not yet deemed guilty in a court of law,” Talmud Torah Khal Adas Yereim administrator, Tzvi Sternberg, told the Journal News, according to a report the paper published in late June. At that time, Sternberg also said Talmud Torah Khal Adas Yereim has installed cameras in all of its school buses to better protect its students.
