Orange County, New York announced today that welfare fraud charges have been filed against 30 people and two corporations. The corporations and two of the 30 people are Satmar hasidim from Kiryas Joel, the Times Herald-Record reported.
The largest fraud was reportedly committed by Mordechai Friedman, a 37-year-old resident of Kiryas Joel, who owns 100% of YMF and Associates. He allegedly fraudulently collected $61,442 in Medicaid benefits and was charged with felony second-degree welfare fraud.
Chayim Deutsch, a 36-year-old from Kiryas Joel, allegedly fraudulently collected $21,133 in government benefits and was charged with third-degree welfare fraud.
In all, $239,979 was allegedly stolen from Medicaid, $63,908 from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Progam (SNAP/ food stamps), and $20,905 from Temporary Assistance.
Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler and County Executive Steve Neuhaus told the media state and federal loopholes which allow people with substantial income or assets to legally collect public benefits are also major problems that must be addressed.
One in every four people in Orange County receives some kind of government benefit. Most are deserving, county officials stress.
Kiryas Joel is, at least on paper, the poorest community in the entire United States.
