Among those arrested is a young married haredi yeshiva student from Jerusalem who reportedly receives a monthly government grant of NIS 2,500 ($659). He was arrested, Yeshiva World reported, for allegedly failing to report 1.3 million shekels ($343,000) in income earned from rent payments for properties he owns.
Tax Authority Crackdown Leads To Arrests

Earlier this year, the Israel Tax Authority began warning Israelis that would be cracking down on tax evasion. The authority urged Israeli to come forward and declare what they owe before the authority discovers the fraud on its own and takes action.
Some Israelis did what they were asked to do but many others did not, and on Monday the Tax Authority announced it was now actively going after suspected tax cheats. It provided the media with a short list of new cases of tax fraud (most not involving haredim) the authority had recently uncovered and pursued, leading to arrests.
Among those cases is a case involving a young married haredi yeshiva student from Jerusalem who reportedly receives a monthly government grant of NIS 2,500 ($659). He was arrested, Yeshiva World reported, for allegedly failing to report 1.3 million shekels ($343,000) in income earned from rent payments for properties he owns.
These handful of arrests are likely meant as warnings done to urge other tax cheats to come forward voluntarily before they, too, are arrested.
