The Chabad House in the haredi city of Bnei Brak’s Shikun Hey neighborhood was hit by an arson attack overnight, coinciding with Tisha B’Av.
The synagogue’s ark suffered surface burns and benches in the synagogue were upturned.
The synagogue’s gabbai (administrator) saw a man known to congregants as a troublemaker “hanging out in the area” when the arson was discovered, Yeshiva World reported. The gabbi called police who came and arrested the man, described only as being in his 40s. The man – presumably haredi, although this is not clear from the report – was arraigned in the Tel Aviv Magistrate Court today.
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin reportedly was shocked that such a thing could happen on Tisha B’Av and said that “acts of terrorism committed on Tisha B’Av must be unequivocally condemned.”
