Top Haredi Rabbi Calls For Shopping Centers Boycott Over Shabbat Violations

Moshe Sternbuch, the #2 rabbi in the vehemently anti-Zionist haredi umbrella organization Edah Haredit, has called for a boycott of the Big shopping center chain, Yeshiva World reported based on a report in the Hebrew language haredi news website Kikar HaShabbat. Sternbuch called for the boycott because the chain’s new shopping center in the Israeli port city of Ashdod is open on Shabbat.
A large investor who donates to haredi causes asked Sternbuch if he should sell his shares in Big over the Shabbat violations.
Sternbuch reportedly told the man he is absolutely obligated to sell all his shares of the company. If he did not do, Sternbuch said, the investor would be a partner in Shabbat violation. And, Sternbuch added, because Big has shopping centers all over the country, they could each choose to follow the Ashdod center’s business model and open on Shabbat, thereby spreading that Shabbat desecration nationwide.
