Chabad ordained Rabbi Menachem Mendel Tewel (Tevel) pleaded guilty to two counts of a criminal sexual act in the third degree but was originally charged with 37 counts of sexual abuse— many first-degree felony counts. But now Tewel will serve his time in a relatively cushy jail, and will walk free in less than 8 months.

Brooklyn DA Gives Another Sweetheart Plea Deal To A Haredi Sex Offender

Almost two years after being arrested on a slew of felony child sex abuse charges, Chabad Rabbi Menachem Mendel Tewel (also spelled Tevel) was sentenced yesterday – to one year in jail.
Tewel pleaded guilty in April to two counts of a criminal sexual act in the third degree, but he was originally charged with 37 counts of sexual abuse — many first-degree felony counts.
The sweetheart plea deal given Tewel by the Brooklyn DA means that with time off for good behavior and possible credit for the short amount of time he served in jail before trial, Tewel could be released in only a few months. As it now stands, his current projected release date is February 5, 2016, as you can see from the screenshot posted below.
And because the sentence is one year or less, Tewel was allowed to serve his sentence in the New York City jail system rather than state prison – meaning haredi and Chabad rabbis who have pull in that city system can do things to make Tewel’s incarceration much less restrictivel than would otherwise be the case.
