You Can Ignore National Air Raid Drills, Top Haredi Yeshiva Tells Thousands Of Yeshiva Students

Israel is having a series of National Home Front drills this week in which locations around the country will hear warning sirens sounded, and the population is expected to rush enter bomb shelters or other safe rooms.
These drills – which were slated to be carried out across the entire country (except for communities close to Gaza) at 11:05 am and 7:05 pm today – are necessary for public safety during rocket and missile attacks like what Israel suffered during the last summer’s Gaza War and serve not only as simple practice, but as a way to expose possible problems with the rapid move to shelters so they can be fixed. Are the shelter doors locked? Can everyone reach a shelter in a few seconds as required? Can everyone fit safely inside? Are there obstacles in the evacuation path?
But as Behadrei Haredim reports, not everywhere the sirens sound will Israeli citizens react as ordered by the Home Front Command – like, for example, the non-hasidic Ashkenazi haredi Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem, the largest yeshiva in the world, which posted an announcement early Tuesday morning for its thousands of students telling them they can ignore the drills.
"Today, Tuesday, alarm sirens will be sounded throughout the country at 11:05 am and at 7:05 pm. The sirens are for testing purposes only and there is no need to pay heed to them all,” the announcement reads – meaning Mir’s thousands of students will be ignoring the drills, much as almost all of them ignore IDF draft notices and take other actions at their rabbis’ direction that are burdensome to non-haredi Israelis.
