The fight to extradite former Melbourne Adass School principal Malka Leifer continues in an Israeli court today, news.com.au reported.
Leifer – who was arrested eight months ago in Israel at the request of Australian police – allegedly sexually abused a string of young teen girls at the über-haredi girls school in Melbourne before fleeing to Israel with the help of Adass leaders in 2008. The school suspended Leifer and reported the alleged abuse to police – but also helped her flee justice.
Leifer, a married mother of eight children from a prominent haredi family, could be charged in Australia with dozens of counts of rape and indecent assault over abuse that allegedly took place between 2001 and 2008.
One of Leifer’s alleged victims, now in her early 20s, is currently jointly suing Leifer and the Adass school in the Victorian Supreme Court in Melbourne. She says the sexual abuse – which Leifer claimed at the time was being carried out to prepare the alleged victim for eventual for marriage – left her suicidal.
Leifer is not contesting the lawsuit and remains in Israel on house arrest.
But Leifer is fighting extradition, and Israeli legal experts told Australian media the extradition case could take as much as two years to be resolved.
