A resident of the haredi West Bank settlement of Betar Illit assaulted police officers Wednesday and was arrested, Yeshiva World reported.
The assault reportedly took place during a search of a private home for illegal substances. The officers suffered a knife wound and bites but were not seriously injured.
The assailant was reportedly arraigned Thursday and could be charged with attempted murder.
Haredi Mayor Meir Rubinstein called the local police commander, who is based in the neighboring non-haredi city of Beitar, to condemn the assault.
“I am shocked and horrified by the brazenness of these criminals who dare to assault police who [nonetheless] remain dedicated to the residents [of the city] and are involved in holy work. Police are to use the full weight of the law against such criminals, who crossed an unacceptable line and all boundaries — to my sorrow exactly as I thought would occur when I warned of this in our last meeting,” Rubinstein reportedly told the police commander.
A police station in slated to be opened in Beitar Illit in the next few months and Rubenstein reportedly tolf the commander he was confident that would increase police activity in the city.
