Michelle Trebitsch – who is reportedly likely to arrested for her role in a Ponzi scheme allegedly run by her husband, Rabbi Marcello "Yair" Trebitsch – is not a registered CPA in New York State, and that might mean that any work she did under a CPA shingle was illegal. In order to practice public accountancy in the state of New York you need to be registered with the state, and that also means you have to take continuing education classes, pay your license fees and not be suspended. But Michelle Trebitsch does not have that registered status even though she's a CPA. And if she practiced as a CPA without it, I'm told it would be the equivalent of an attorney who practiced law in New York State without permission.

Michelle Trebitsch, the daughter of former New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon "Shelly" Silver, is reportedly about to be arrested and charged in the alleged $7 million Ponzi scheme her husband, Rabbi Marcello "Yair" Tebitsch allegedly ran. Marcello "Yair" Trebitsch was arrested earlier this week.
Michelle Trebitsch, a CPA, is reportedly a co-owner of her husband's investment firm and did the firm's books.
But it turns out that Michelle Trebitsch is not a registered CPA in New York State, and that might mean that any work she did under a CPA shingle was illegal. In order to practice public accountancy in the state of New York you need to be registered with the state, and that also means you have to take continuing education classes, pay your license fees and not be suspended. But Michelle Trebitsch does not have that registered status. As you can see, the New York State registry listing for Michelle Trebitsch shows she is not registered.
The state's registry website notes:
Individuals: To practice within New York State, a professional must be licensed and REGISTERED. When a professional informs the Department at the time of reregistration that he or she will not be practicing in New York, the record is marked INACTIVE as of the start of the next registration period. If a registration has lapsed without explanation, the record is marked NOT REGISTERED. If the Department has received reliable notice of the death of a licensee, that record is marked DECEASED. If the license is rescinded due to an error in issuing the license, the record is marked LICENSE RESCINDED. If the license is currently suspended, revoked, or has been surrendered pursuant to disciplinary action, the record is marked LICENSE SUSPENDED, LICENSE REVOKED, or LICENSE SURRENDERED.
Michelle Trebitsch’s father, former New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, was arrested by federal authorities in January for allegedly taking almost $4 million in bribes and kickbacks, causing him to resign as state assembly speaker. Silver faces as much as 60 years prison.
The charges against Silver are said to be unrelated to the charges against Rabbi Marcello “Yair” Trebitsch and the potential charges against Silver’s daughter Michelle.
Both Trebitsches and Silver are Orthodox Jews.
Michelle and Rabbi Marcello "Yair" Trebitsch are the parents of six children.
