Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party will mandate that all its coalition partners agree to vote in favor of legislation meant to weaken Israel’s Supreme Court and give the sitting government much more control over court appointments and its function than it now has. The move would effectively remove much of the only real check and balance against the government, and would dramatically endanger the rights of the government’s left wing opposition and of minorities.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party will mandate that all its coalition partners agree to vote in favor of legislation meant to weaken Israel’s Supreme Court and give the sitting government much more control over court appointments and its function than it now has, an unnamed senior Likud Party official reportedly told Ha’aretz Sunday.
Both Netanyahu’s Likud Party and the right-wing Zionist Orthodox Habayit Hayehudi Party – which is even more anti-Supreme Court (if that is even possible) than Likud – want the language mandating support for the legislation meant to neuter the Supreme Court placed in all coalition agreements.
The Likud-HaBayit HaYehudi bills would effectively remove much of the only real check and balance against the government, and would dramatically endanger the rights of the government’s left wing opposition and of minorities.
