Haredi City Councilman Makes Sure Jerusalem Water Is…Kosher For Passover

Ashkenazi haredi Jerusalem City Councilman Yitzchak Pindrus wants to make sure Jerusalem’s Jews have kosher for Passover…city water.
That’s because haredim believe the city’s regular water supply, which comes from Israel’s national water carrier, has hametz (leavened bread or other leavened ingredients) in it.
So during Passover, the city’s water supply will primarily come from a different source: underground wells “where there is less of a chance” of hametz being found, Yeshiva World reported. If other water is needed, it will be specially treated to deal with the alleged hametz problem.
The city’s water supply switched over early Wednesday and will continue using special Passover water as a source until the morning of April 12, more than a day after the Passover holiday has ended in Israel.
Pindrus reportedly thanked Hagihon Water Utility District Manager Mr. Danny Sofer and other Hagihon staffers for their cooperation in getting “mehadrin” kosher for Passover water for Jerusalem’s residents.
Normative halakha (Orthodox Jewish law) does not require special kosher for Passover water, and it is highly unlikely anything that would cause a Jew to violate Passover is flowing through the nation’s water system.
