A 30-year-old Bnei Brak haredi man, Elijah Lipa Bvarman, is suspected of sexually attacking haredi girls over a six-year period. He was arrested last week after allegedly attacking a girl of about 5 in a stairwell.
But even though their daughters were allegedly assaulted, haredi families living in the haredi city of Modi'in Illit have refused to cooperate with the police, and there is concern that the attacker will not be charged, the haredi news website Kikar HaShabbat reported.
The parents and their victimized children are reportedly refusing to cooperate because haredi rabbis signed an agreement with the suspect that stipulates that he will undergo medical and psychological treatment.
But police say the suspect stopped treatment on his own, violating that agreement – an agreement which in any case is illegal.
In the haredi man’s latest alleged assault – which took place after the agreement with the haredi rabbis was allegedly signed and then violated – the 5-year-old victim started to scream for help. Her father heard her and he and neighbors began chasing the suspect, who was trying to escape.
Police were called and arrested the suspect.
During his initial police interrogation, the suspect reportedly denied trying to sexually assault the girl.
"In some cases, the statute of limitations [has come into force], but unfortunately in some of the other cases [that are still prosecutable], families of the alleged victims refused to go against the rabbis. They refused to cooperate with police and give evidence," a police source reportedly told the Israeli news website Walla!
The suspect's remand was reportedly extended until Sunday by the vice president of the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court Judge Benny Sagi.
