Circumcised men may soon be able to re-grow their foreskins, the Daily Mail reported.
A US nonprofit founded to research and implement regenerative medical therapies for circumcised males, Foregen, claims to be close to developing a method that, the Daily Mail reports, “will allow men’s foreskins to regenerate – much like a salamander is able to re-grow a limb.”
Regeneration takes place by creating an extra-cellular matrix, almost like a skeleton for tissue. The matrix is seeded with stem cells that will grow into foreskin.
Foregen reportedly says it will use top experts from the field to use that method to regrow foreskins, beginning with trials on animals and progressing to trials on humans.
In 2013, the Foregen reportedly had its first breakthrough when it de-cellularized bull foreskins.
Foregen reportedly has permission to acquire human adult foreskins which it will use to carry out the same experiments.
But it remains unclear how Foregen will be able to regenerate peripheral nerves.
Even so, Foregen says newly regrown foreskins will be fully functioning because the body recognizes the regrown foreskin as its own tissue.
Using the same technology, scientists and doctors have been able to partially regenerate living human hearts, vaginal tissue and breast tissue while fully regenerating bladders and the last joint of a human finger. Scientists also are able to regrow functioning penises in rabbits.
Foregen claims the regrown foreskins will restore sensitivity it says research shows is lost through circumcision.
