Israel’s High Court Of Justice rejected a petition challenging the plea bargain agreement given to Sefardi haredi ‘kabbalist’ Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto – meaning Pinto will turn state's witness and admit to bribing senior police officers in a bid to find out what police knew about a fraud that stole millions of dollars from poor Holocaust survivors. The three justice panel was reportedly headed by Justice Miriam Naor, president of the High Court, who was unhappy with how the deal was made but let it stand nonetheless Yeshiva World reported.
This means Pinto be required to officially admit in court that he tried to bribe Israel Police Major-General Ephraim Bracha. Pinto will also serve as a state’s witness in the bribery and corruption case against former Israel Police major-general, Menashe Arviv.
In return, Pinto will serve no more than one year in prison.
Naor was surprised the state made the agreement with Pinto before it even questioned Arviv – who has consistently claimed he has conclusive evidence that proves Pinto is lying.
Pinto could still face embezzlement and grand theft charges for the looting of tens of millions of dollars from the Hazon Yeshaya charity. The money and food donations were supposed to used to feed elderly, poor Holocaust survivors. Instead, much of the money allegedly ended up in Pinto’s pockets.
