Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem Aryeh Stern complained that the city plowed streets on Shabbat – even though plowing was necessary (despite claims to the contrary) to allow emergency vehicles to safely pass.
Yeshiva World reports:
Jerusalem Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi HaGaon HaRav Aryeh Stern Shlita sent a letter to Mayor Nir Barkat addressing the chilul Shabbos surrounding snow plowing.
The rav sent a letter on Sunday morning 3 Adar, complaining about the fact snow plows worked on Shabbos. The rav commended city agencies for their hard work on erev Shabbos, clearing major vehicular routes. He then took objection with plows continuing to work on Shabbos. He explained that he was briefed on erev Shabbos and most streets in the capital had already been cleared, yet plows worked in some areas over Shabbos.
“I would be grateful if you would probe the matter and inform me who was responsible for this to permit me to give them proper instructions in line with Halacha for future storms”.
