Many haredi yeshiva students make extra money by working in matzoh bakeries in the weeks before Passover.
But now that may not be possible for those who get caught with asmartphone.
According to a report in Yeshiva World based on a report in Wednesday’s Israeli edition of the haredi newspaper Hamodia, haredi matzoh bakeries have told workers they may not have non-kosher cellphones - i.e., smartphones or other phones with tex messaging and/or Internet capability.
Shmuel Katina, who owns a haredi matzoh bakery, reportedly buys kosher cellphones and gives them to his employees for free. But any worker caught with a non-kosher cellphone will have 10% of his pay taken away.
Workers caught with non-kosher phones may be summarily fired, Hamodia reported, emphasizing that Katina and others note haredi rabbis supervising matzoh bakeries are all opposed to smartphone and other “non-kosher” phone ownership and use, as are top haredi rabbis.
