Rabbi Fredrick Martin “Ephraim” Karp will likely be ordered extradited to Maryland to face child sex abuse charges there, a spokesman for the Queens, New York District Attorney’s Office told the Cleveland Jewish News.
Karp has a court hearing today in Queens. He was arrested in JFK International Airport January 15 as he tried to flee the country.
Karp is the director of spiritual living at Menorah Park Center for Senior Living in Beachwood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland.
The Mayland arrest warrant charges the 50-year-old haredi rabbi with sexual abuse of a minor, continuing course of conduct; perverted practice; along with a second-degree sex offense and a third-degree sex offense.
Karp is also the president of Neshama, the national association of Jewish chaplains, formerly known as the National Association of Jewish Chaplains.
Neshama’s annual conference was held in Jerusalem about a week after Karp’s arrest.
Karp remains Neshama’s president.
