A 22-year-old yeshiva student from Israel was stabbed in Chabad’s main synagogue located in Chabad-Lubavitch international headquarters in Brooklyn, New York tonight, Chabad and Israeli media reported.
At approximately 1:45 am EST, a person described as a black male reportedly entered the synagogue at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, said "I will kill the Jew! I want to kill the Jew!," and stabbed Levi Rosenblatt, who was reportedly standing near the bima (prayer lectern) praying at the time of the attack.
A different yeshiva student saw the man enter wielding a knife and shouted at the man to drop to drop his weapon.
Instead, the man rushed to bima and stabbed Rosenblatt.
Shortly afterward a police officer entered and ordered the assailant to drop the knife.
He did, but picked up again almost immediately and rushed at police, who shot him once in the stomach.
Rosenblatt, who is from the West Bank haredi settlement of Betar Illit, was treated at the scene for multiple stab wounds. He was transported to a hospital by Hatzolah and is reportedly in stable condition.
"My son was lightly wounded, I spoke to him on the phone and thank God in the merit of the Rebbe, he was in the Rebbe's home, he is ok," the victim's mother reportedly told Ynet’s Hebrew-language website.
(Other reports have the victim's condition listed as serious but stable. or critical but stable.)
The motivation for the attack is not yet clear, but it is reportedly being treated as a possible hate crime and is not thought to be terrorism-related.
The alleged assailant, identified as 49-year-old Calvin Peters by the Daily News, died at Kings County Hospital at 3:15 a.m., police reportedly said.
One police officer was treated at a different hospital for ringing in the ears apparently caused by proximity to the gunshot.
Update 1:03 pm CST – According to the AP, "police say the 49-year-old Peters was emotionally disturbed and had a documented history of mental illness. They say he had been arrested 19 times since 1982, most recently in 2006 for drugs."
