The Hillel Modern Orthodox day school in Passaic, New Jersey and its affiliated kollel (advanced yeshiva for married students, in this case, more of a community education and outreach organization rather than a traditional stand alone kollel) the Passaic Clifton Community Kollel (PCCK) has invited Rabbi Yisroel Belsky to speak and won't rescind the invitation, even though some parents complained.
Above: Rabbi Yisroel Belsky
The Hillel Modern Orthodox day school in Passaic, New Jersey and its affiliated kollel (advanced yeshiva for married students, in this case, more of a community education and outreach organization rather than a traditional stand alone kollel) the Passaic Clifton Community Kollel (PCCK) has invited Rabbi Yisroel Belsky to speak.
Belsky is a known protector of pedophiles and reportedly was almost indicted by the Ocean County, New Jersey prosecutor's office for witness intimidation in the case against haredi pedophile Rabbi Yosef Kolko.
Belsky – who is the rosh yeshiva (senior dean) of the haredi Yeshiva Torah Vodaas – also told Jews not to report child sex abuse to police or prosecutors.
Even so, Belsky remains the Orthodox Union's OU Kosher's co-posek (rabbinic decisor) along with Yeshiva University's Rabbi Hershel Schachter and is now slated to speak on Thanksgiving to a group of Modern Orthodox Jews in Passaic.
There are some Passaic parents who object to this invitation and tried to have it rescinded, but the school and the kollel refused.
I'm told the kollel sees no problem at all with having Belsky speak while the school is simply refusing to reverse its decision to invite him.
The Hillel school has two morei derech (spiritual guides; rabbinic decisors), Rabbi Hershel Schachter and Rabbi Mordechai Willig of Yeshiva University.
Willig – who defended physical, sexual and emotional abuser Rabbi Baruch Lanner and violated basic laws of a beit din (religious court) to harass, threaten and intimidate a family member of one of Lanner's many victims and only apologized for doing this after he was on the verge of being fired – apparently either was not asked about Belsky or ordered that his opinion not be made public or discussed.
Schachter allegedly ruled that there is nothing wrong with having Belsky – his co-posek at the OU – speak, and those who object to this should just not come to hear him.
But that is not how some parents feel.
Belsky "doesn't belong in a school of children," a parent told me. "He protects pedophiles and protects rapists."
Apparently protecting pedophiles and rapists doesn't disqualify a rabbi from speaking in an Orthodox school – or serving as the co-rabbinic-head of the largest organization of Orthodox synagogues and the largest kosher supervisor in the world, the OU.
