Chabad’s Yeshivah Centre in Melbourne will become the focus of a royal commission hearing into its apparent coverups of child sexual abuse scandals, The Age reported.
The hearing is reportedly scheduled to begin in February and could last for as long as two weeks.
More revelations about cases of abuse at Chabad’s flagship institution are expected. Abuse victims will be called to give evidence. So will senior members of Chabad said to be involved in the coverups.
Two Chabad pedophiles, Rabbi David Kramer, a former teacher at Chabad’s Yeshivah College, and David Samuel Cyprys, a former Yeshivah College employee, were convicted of multiple counts of child sex abuse (in Cyprys’ case, including child rape).
Kramer, who was extradited to Australia from the US after serving a child sex abuse prison sentence in St. Louis Missouri, served a very brief prison term in Australia for the abuse he committed there before fleeing with Chabad’s help two decades ago. He was deported from Australia in September. He is US-Israeli citizen and it is not known which country he was deported to.
Cyprys – who was hired by Chabad despite a previous child sex abuse-related citation Chabad knew about – sexually abused more than a dozen children associated with the school. He was convicted last year on multiple counts related to many different former students, and is still in prison. While there he allegedly tried sexually abuse an 18-year-old fellow inmate and was transferred to a different, stricter prison as a result.
But Cyprys and Kramer are allegedly not the only two Chabad pedophiles to prey on students at Chabad’s Yeshivah Centre and the Kramer and Cyprys coverups are allegedly not the only coverups of child sex abuse carried out by Chabad there.
The $500 million AUD Royal Commission investigation into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse began last year. So far, more than 20 cases have been investigated, including cases involving the Salvation Army, the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne and others.
The royal commission is scheduled to complete its report in December 2017.
Update 1:50 pm CST – Kramer was deported to the US.
