An Israeli cult leader was sentenced to 30 years in prison today by the Tel Aviv District Court – an extremely harsh sentence by Israeli standards.
Sixty-four-year-old Goel Ratzon led a polygamous cult. He also sexually abused many of his daughters and wives.
Ratzon had also been charged with enslavement, but the court previously found him not guilty on those charges angering many cult, psychology and sex trafficking experts.
Ratzon claimed the women lived with him of their own free will. Many of them had Ratzon’s name and face tattooed on their bodies.
Ratzon had 21 wives and 38 children.
One of those 21 wives, called “Maayan” by Army Radio, welcomed Ratzon’s sentence. She said it would prevent another Ratzon cult "rising from the depths" of the daughters' generation, Reuters reported.
