A Frankfurt, Germany glatt kosher butcher with close ties to the Orthodox Jewish community sold more than 88,000 pounds of non-kosher meat to Orthodox Jews for at least two years until the fraud was uncovered, German media sources reported.
A & L Aviv Butchers, located at Hanauer Landstraße 50, 60314 Frankfurt am Main and under the kosher supervision of the city's Orthodox rabbinate, was owned by two men only identified as 48-year-old Leslie W. and 56-year-old Akiva H. It served Jewish communities throughout the country.
The pair, who are well known members of the Jewish community, are now on trial.
In testimony given last week, Akiva H. reportedly admitted selling the non-kosher meat in 2008 when his business was “threatened with insolvency,” He apologized to “all those whose religious feelings were hurt,” the Bild newspaper reported according to a report in the Jerusalem Post.
His partner admitted to going along with the fraud when he discovered it in 2010 because he feared reporting the fraud then would destroy the business.
The fraud continued through 2012.
Aviv Butchers was also the kosher meat supplier for a Jewish school and a nursing home.
If you understand German, you can read a report on the trial in the Jewish Juedische Allgemeine newspaper.
